Properties of the Motor Unit Flashcards
Functions of the motor system
- Set muscle tone of body
- Bring about voluntary movements
Structural components of the motor system
- Motoneurones
- Skeletal muscles
- Neuromuscular junctions
What does a motor unit comprise of?
- 1 alpha-motoneurone
- All extrafusal muscle fibres it supplies
What is a single cell of a muscle called?
Myocyte
Structure of muscle (from myofibril to muscle)
- Myofibrils are sub-components in myocytes
- Myocytes collect to form fascicles
- Fascicles collect to form a muscle
3 tissue envelopes of skeletal muscle
- Endomysium
- Perimysium
- Epimysium
What does the endomysium surround?
Myocytes
What does the perimysium surround?
A fascicle
What does the epimysium surround?
All fascicles of a muscle (and neurovascular bundle)
Where does the neurovascular bundle of a muscle run?
In between and in parallel with fascicles
What is a tendon?
Organised tough band of fibrous connective tissue mass that forms a point of confluence of contraction by single myocytes of a muscle
Common assembles of fascicles of skeletal muscle
- Convergent muscle
- Strap muscle
- Circular muscle
- Fusiform muscle
- Pennated muscle
Types of pennated muscle
- Unipennate
- Bipennate
- Multipennate
2 types of motoneurone
- Upper motoneurone
- Lower motoneurone
What characteristics are shared by muscle fibres of the same motor unit?
- Contraction speed
- Susceptibility to fatigue
