What are natural rights?
natural rights, which are said to be the God-given rights to life, liberty, and property
Locke identified two key aspects to our existence, what are they?
Liberty, which is a product of our independence
Property, which we use to maintain that independence
What is the state of nature?
Inconvenience, it’s not terrible but could be better and way major way things can be better is to cooperate with others
Society should have limited authority over us, no more than is……
Necessary to regulate our co-existence
If we want to be free to pursue our own interests….
We must be willing to let others pursue their own interests.
Who argued for a separation of powers?

What is due process?
The requirement that government, when dealing with people, have in place a fair procedure which it applies equally to all
What is the social contract?
Foundational agreement between people and their govt in which citizens consent to be governed so long as the govt protects their natural rights
What is the state of nature?
A theory on how people might have lived before societies came into existence
What is the Enlightenment?
A period of Western European history following the Middle Ages and the source of our ideas about natural right
What ideas are embodied in the Declaration of Independence?
The natural right of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness
The idea that govts are created by people to protect their natural rights
