the english school Flashcards
when was the english school created
1950s
what is the principle of english school ideology?
to create a medium between realism and liberalism by studying international relations and histroy through social strucutres and international orders
what distinctions did martin wright make between international structures
argued that there are 3 Rs of international relations theories that can be categorised as:
realism: the idea that there is no international society just power politics (international system)
rationalism: international society is founded on shared norms, values and institutions
revolutionarism: world system i n which states must be replaced with a federal wrold state of co-operation in order for justice to flourish
what are martin wrights’ key concepts of IR
1) the international is anarchical no one state can tell another what to do
2) IR is founded on norms, all states act on norms without knowing it. anarchy is one of the most important norms and conflict is an exception to the norm
3) norms are dealt with through diplomatic dialogue
pluralism v solidarism
the english school argue that the more an international system values soverignty and has a low degree of shared norms values and instiutions then it is a pluralism system
whereas a system with high levels of shared norms and insuttions with less of an importance of soveringty the society is more solidarist
