The Endocrine System And Regulating Blood Sugar Flashcards
Describe the endocrine system
A system of glands that regulates bodily functions via hormones secreted into bloodstream
-a slower, longer-acting response compared to nervous system
What does the endocrine system include?
-hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, gonads
What are hormones and they’re rolls?
Chemical receptors that are made in one part of the body but affect other part(s)
- controls growth, development, reproduction, behaviour, energy metabolism, and water balance
- usually travel in bloodstream
How does the pancreas play a roll in maintaining [sugar] in the blood?
- in addition to producing digestive enzymes, the pancreas also produces hormones in specialized cells called the islets if langerhans
- 2 types of cells in islets of langerhan, alpha produce glucagon and beta produce insulin
Glucagon: released by A cells when [sugar] is low, promotes conversion of glycogen into glucose
Insulin: released by B cells when [sugar] is high, promotes intake of glucose by cells and the conversion of glucose into glycogen
How do the adrenal glands play a roll in maintaining [sugar] in the blood?
- produce a # of hormones including epinephrine, norepinephrine, and glucocorticoids
- epinephrine and norepinephrine both increase [sugar] by promoting the breakdown of glycogen
- glucocorticoids increase [sugar] increasing the level of amino acids in the blood
- the liver is capable of converting these excess amino acids into glucose
