Sympathetic nervous system (SNS)

A

prepares body for stress (i.e. increase heart rate and blood flow)
nerves of SNS originate in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae

Parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS)

A

restores balance after stress has been induced (i.e. decreased heart rate and blood flow)
nerves of PSNS originate in the brain, the cervical vertebrae, and the causal vertebrae
