Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What is homeostasis
A
The process of maintaining relatively constant internal conditions (a dynamic equilibrium)
2
Q
Describe the main parts of homeostatic control systems
A
1) Sensor: detects when homeostasis has been disturbed and sends a message to the integrator
2) Integrator: relays information to appropriate regulator/effector
3) Effector: acts to restore balance
3
Q
Positive feedback loop
A
Response increases initial stimulus, not useful for homeostasis
4
Q
Negative feedback loops
A
Response reduces initial stimulus
•when body is outside normal range, action is taken to return to normal
