Function of the endocrine system
To secrete hormones in the blood stream to regulate many of our bodily functions
Work together with nervous system to regulate and coordinate physiological functions
Definition of hormones
Chemicals released from glands that circulate in the bloodstream and are carried to target structures around the body
Prolactin hormone
Made by pituitary gland
Causes breasts to grow and make milk during pregnancy and after birth
Promote uterine contractions
Melatonin hormone
Produced in the pineal gland
Helps body know when to sleep
Regulates functions through the body’s timings - eg when puberty starts
Insulin and glucagon hormones
Produced in the pancreas
Important for digesting food and managing your use of sugar for energy after digestion
