Stduying The Brain Flashcards
What are the 4 ways of studying the brain
Post mortem
EEG
FMRI
ERP
Post mortem
Brain examined after death
See where damage has occurred and how that could explain previous behaviour
FMRI
Repeated scans to create an image of the concentration of oxygen in the blood
Areas of high activity will show corresponding high levels of blood oxygenation and blood flow
Allows sections of the brain that are particularly active during different tasks to be identified
EEG
Small sensors attached to the scalp to pick up electrical signals produced when brain cells send signals to each other
Measures amplitude and frequency of electrical activity in brain
Identifies patterns in activity that nay be associated with certain states
Help to identify abnormalities
ERP
Measures electrical activity in response to a specific stimulus
In order to identify small specific responses , must take recordings from many presentations and average out the responses to obtain event related potential
