- believed the monarch should be a man
- Henry said Elizabeth was illegitimate, which he then changed his mind about but Protestants still questioned it.
- she was Protestant catholic’s would want a catholic monarch
Why did elizabeth struggle to find a husband?
- if she married a European she would give another country to much power and influence
- if she chose English nobility this would anger those who weren’t chosen
- the religious settlement meant a catholic husband would be unpopular
- if she married she would lose her control

Mary I took England to war with France, this lead to there being a french threat in Scotland when Elizabeth became queen

Patronage helped ensure loyalty because those who received patronage relied on Elizabeth for some of all of their income and status

Helped ensure political stability- all members of the elite felt they had a chance to be rewarded by her so were unlikely to rebel against her

In local governments most positions were unpaid and members of the nobility and gentry volunteered for them because being part of the local government was a symbol of status and power

They were in charge of administering national policies like the poor laws and taxation in their counties, and enforcing law and order. They also looked after local issues like maintaining sewers and roads.
