The Eightfold Path Flashcards
What does Right View refer to?
Part of the Wisdom section. Freeing the mind of ignorance by understanding and accepting the Buddhas teachings. Eg the four noble truths or three marks of existence. Understanding the truth of suffering and its cause.
What is Right Intention?
Part of Wisdom section. Having kind, compassionate and selfless thoughts. Our thoughts reflect our actions so cannot be rooted in the root poisons.
What is Right Speech?
Part of the Morality section. Not using our words to harm others. Buddhists should speak truthfully in a helpful and kind way- avoid lying and gossiping about others.
What is Right Action?
Part of the Morality section. Performing skilful actions. Behaving in a way that is kind towards other beings and does not cause harm. Avoiding actions rooted in the 3 poisons. Following the Five Precepts- avoiding stealing, killing, overindulging in sensual pleasures.
What is Right Livelihood?
Part of the Morality section. Buddhists believe that we should earn a living in a moral way that doesn’t cause harm to other people or animals. This means that Buddhists wouldn’t be butchers, armed forces or drug dealers as this causes harm. Instead they may choose to become teachers, nurses or carers as they benefit others.
What is Right Effort?
Part of the Meditation section. This means putting effort into meditation and controlling our thoughts. By practising samatha and vipassana meditation we can free ourselves from thoughts that are rooted in the three root poisons.
What is Right Mindfulness?
Part of the Meditation section. This means becoming fully aware of yourself and the world around you. Being mindful of the present and not worrying about the past or future. This allows Buddhists to develop awareness of their own thoughts and feelings. Samatha meditation can aid this.
What is Right Concentration?
Part of the Meditation section. Developing the mental concentration and focus that is needed to control our thoughts and mind.
