The effect the Eu has on decision making in the uk Flashcards
Paragraph 1:
MUP scotland
Paragraph 1 KU:
In 2012 a bill was passed to introduce a minimum unit pricing of 50p per unit in scotland
- They were challenged by the European parliament who claimed this breached a trading agreement
Paragraph 1 Analysis:
-The bill has been passed by the scottish government with real assent and therefore should be put into place however eu have stopped it from being enforced. Shows they do have an effect on decision making in the uk
Paragraph 2:
Prisoners votes
Paragraph 2 KU:
- In the Uk prisoners are not allowed the vote by law and has been this way many years
- Two births prisoners challenged this is european court and they ruled that changes would have to be made
Paragraph 2 Analysis:
- David Cameron is strongly against this and has not allowed prisoners the vote.
- Eu say he will have to
- Overall impact is varied as they may force him however it is limited as just now they have been unable to and prisoners still do not have the vote
Paragraph 3:
Power to make own decisions
Paragraph 3 KU:
- Britain opted out of some of the EU policies such as taking on the currency and the eurozone bailout
- Britain can make many decisions that the Eu are not allowed to challenge for example going to war
Paragraph 3 Analysis:
+Strongly conveys that we have out own choices in decision making as we have not taken all of the policies of the EU.
- Conveys that they can make own decisions without being forced to do otherwise and thus highlighting that the Eu does not have a big influence on decision making in the UK.
- Also the ability to freely make decisions without any challenge further emphasises the limited influence of the eu
Paragraph 4:
Ability to decide whether to stay in the EU
Paragraph 4 KU:
- Uk are able to decide whether they wish to stay in the EU or not
- and a referendum is taking place in 2016 to decide
Paragraph 4 Analysis:
- This again highlights that the uk are free to do as they wish as they do not have to remain in the eu
- Therefore shows a huge drawback of any form influence that the eu has as ultimately if the uk do not agree or want to abide by the rules of the eu then they have the power to leave.
