Smoking Ban
Paragraph 1 KU:
- Ban on smoking in indoor public places (examples)
- The smoking ban was introduced in 2006 (March 26th by labour/lib-dem coalition)
Paragraph 1 Analysis:
+Drastically decreased health inequalities, death rates and the presence of cancer.
+Rates of smoking for boys and girls drastically decreasing, girls decreasing from 28% to 19% by 2010
+Saves 600 lives annually
- Many continue to smoke and there is still many more people in deprived areas smoking than in privelaged areas and therefore inequalities still exist.
Paragraph 2:
Free Prescription Charges
Paragraph 2 KU:
- Introduced by the Snp Govt in april 2011
- Means no one in scotland has to pay for presc
- Costs govt in excess of 55 million annually
Paragraph 2 Analysis:
\+ Means anyone can get medicine regardless of social class or any other factors and therefore eliminates inequality \+ Means many poorer people can get repeat prescriptions that they would not have been able to afford - Overall dealt with the inequalities concerning the link between poor health and poverty well however this link has many other factors that contribute to it and much more needs to be done
Paragraph 3:
Free school meals for all children in p1,2,3
Paragraph 3 KU:
- Snp introduced Free school meals for all children in p1,2,3 in january 2015
- applies to 165,000 in scotland
Paragraph 3 Analysis:
+Children who could not afford to eat now can and improves health
- However many of the children entitled are from a more privileged background and do not require this (money wasted).
- Misses out many in older primaries, should be means tested.
Paragraph 4:
Alcolhol - min unit pricing
Paragraph 4 KU:
- in 2012 Snp tried to intorduce a minimum price of 50p per unit of alcohol.
- Eu stopped bill as it was in breech of agreement
Paragraph 4 Analysis:
- Alcohol huge cause of inequality in scotland and huge issue.
- Still exists and scotland has very high rates of alcoholism. effects mental health and physical health
- been very unsuccessful in tackling this as not been able to pass the law.
