the edocrine system Flashcards
What is a hormone ?
chemical molecules released into the blood
what is the endocrine system ?
composed of glands which secrete chemicals called hormones directly into the blood ?
where does then blood carry hormones to ?
to the target organ where it produces effect .
name the differences between hormonal and nervous responses ?
NERVES: *very fast action *act for a very short time *act on a precise area HORMONAL *slower action *long time *acts in a more general way
Name all the hormones in the endocrine system .
- pituitary gland
- thyroid
- adrenal gland
- ovaries
- the pancreas
- testes
what does the pituitary gland do ?
‘master gland’ located in the brain which secretes several hormones into the blood in response to body conditions in turn act on other glands to stimulate other hormones to be released to bring about effects.
thyroid?
- produces thyroxine
* regulates rate of metabolism , heart rate ,temperature
adrenal?
- produces adrenaline
* prepares the body for ‘flight or fight’
ovaries
*produces oestrogen which is involved in the menstrual cycle
testes
- produces testosterone
* controls puberty and sperm production in males
the pancreas
- produces insulin
* used to regulate blood glucose level
