hormones in reproduction Flashcards
where is oestrogen produced ?
ovaries
what is the main male reproductive hormone ?
testosterone
what is the main female reproductive hormone ?
oestrogen
where is testosterone produced ?
testes
what does testosterone do?
stimulates sperm production
what is the process called when an egg is released approx. every 28 day ?
ovulation
where is FSH produces ?
the pituitary gland
what does FSH do?
causes an egg to mature in the ovary
*stimulates the ovary to produce oestrogen
where does oestrogen produce?
ovaries
give 2 effects oestrogen has on the body ?
- causes the lining of the uterus to grow
- stimulates the release of LH (which causes the release of an egg)
- inhibits release of FSH
where is LH(luteinising hormone) produces ?
pituitary gland
give an effect LH has on the body ?
*stimulates the release of an egg at day 14 (ovulation )
where is progesterone produced?
produces in the ovaries y the remains of the follicle after ovulation
give 2 effects progesterone has on the body?
*maintains the lining of the uterus during the second
half of the cycle.
*inhibits the release of LH and FSH
what happens when the level of progesterone falls ?
the uterus lining breaks down
what happens in stage 1 of the menstrual cycle ?
day 1-menstrauton begins . the uterus lining breaks down for 4 day
stage 2?
the uterus lining building up again from 4-14 into thick spongy layer full of blood vessels ready to receive fertilised egg
stage 3?
an egg develops and is released fro the ovary
stage 4?
wall is maintained
name the stages of the menstrual cycle ?
1)LH causes ovary to release egg
2)FSH transported in the blood
3)FSH causes egg matures in ovary
4FSH stimulates ovary to release oestrogen
5)oestrogen released from the ovary
name stages 6-10?
6) oestrogen transported into the blood
7) oestrogen prevents further release of FSH
8) oestrogen stimulates pituitary gland to release LH
9) LH is released from the pituitary gland
10) LH is transported into the blood which causes ovary to release egg
