The Earth And The Moon Flashcards
Exoplanet
A planet in orbit around a star other than our sun
Axis
-the imaginary line that earth spins around
Day
The time taken by a planet to make one full spin on its axis
Night
Period on one section of the earth/ other planet that is in the shadows -facing away from the sun
Year
Length of time taken for a planet to orbit the sun
Season
Changes in temperature during the year as the earth moves around it orbit
Constellation
Collection of star that make a pattern in the sky
Why do we have day and night
- the earth spins on its axis
- the sun lights up half of the earth and half stays in the shadow
Why do we have seasons
-the earths axis is tilted 23.5 degrees
Rotation of the earth
Move of the earth on its own axis
Sun rise and sunset happens
- the earth spins
- it makes it looks like the sun is rising/setting but the earth is either moving away or towards
When is it summer for the northern hemisphere
- when the northern hemisphere is closer to the sun
- the tilt makes the sun rays more concentrated in one area
Phases of the moon + why we see them
Shape of moon as we see it from earth
- half of the moon is lit at any time
- and shadows of the moon change as it orbits
Umbra
The area of total shadow behind an opaque object where no light has reached
Total solar eclipses
An eclipse where all of our sun is covered by the moon
