The Ear, Receptors And Sensations Flashcards
What is Sensation?
•Info detected by receptors, carried to CNS by PNS
What is Perception
•How CNS processes/interprets info
What is sensory adaptation?
•Process in which our brain cells experience diminished sensitivity to constant stimuli picked up by our senses.
What are photoreceptors?
•detects loght Eg. rods and cones in our eye
What are Chemoreceptors?
•detects chemical molecules Eg. taste buds
What Are mechanoreceptors?
•detects physical/mechanical forces Eg. Hair cells in our ear
What are thermoreceptors?
•detects temperature Eg, heat receptors in our skin
What are Proproceptors?
• located in muscles, joints, and tendons, helps to detect and respond to movement and position of limbs and other body parts
Taste: what kind of receptor and what direction does it go to process info?
•Chemoreceptors in the tongue (taste)
• signals travels to thalamus and processed in the parietal lobe
Smell: what kind of receptor and what what direction does it take for it be processed?
• chemoreceptors in the nose, detected by Olfactory cells; sensory nerves that functions for the sense of smell
• signal goes to Olfactory centre than travels and gets processed in the frontal lobe
How many sections in the ear?
• outer, Middle, and inner ear
•inner ear is fluid filled
What is the function of Auricles/Pinna?
(Outer Ear)
• Skin & Cartilage, collect & funnel info to the ear
•contains ear wax & hair to protect the ear, prevents entry of foreign material
What is the function of the Tympanic Membrane and Ear drum?
(Middle ear)
•covers end of auditory Canal, Converts sound waves to mechanical vibrations
What is the Function of Eustachian Tube?
(Middle ear)
• allows pressure to equalize between cuddle ear& outside of body
• connects to back of throat, not really involved in hearing
Function of Semi Circular Canal?
• contains receptors for balance
