Brain + Spinal Cord Flashcards
Where is Grey/White matter located
Grey: outside layer of brain, inside layer sc
White: inside layer brain, outside layer sc
What is the Function of Spinal Cord ?
(Collin of neuron tissue from bottom of brain through the spine)
Function: link between brain + Peripheral nervous system (primary reflex centre)
What protects the Spinal Cord ?
Vertebrae (base), cerebrospinal fluid, meanings(soft tissue)
What is the brain, what is it protected by?
Control centre for the body.
Protected by skull, cerebrospinal fluid, meninges (soft tissue)
What parts consist of the forebrain?
Hypothalamus, cerebrum, thalamus, corpus collusom.
What are the 4 lobes and their function?
Frontal Lobe: controls voluntary movement, personality and decision making.
Temporal Lobe: learning, Language comp, memmories
Occipital Lobe: vision processing
Parietal Lobe: touch and temp awareness, pain reception, and spacial awareness.
Corpus Collusom (Forebrain)
Consist of white matter. Shares info and connects the left and right hemisphere of the cerebrum. (2 hemispheres)
Thalamus (Forebrain)
Relay Centre. Coordinates incoming info between different parts of the brain
Hypothalamus (Forebrain)
• link between neurons and endocrine system. Helps keep your body balanced and maintain homeostasis stasis
• controls secretion from pituitary gland
Pituitary gland (forebrain)
• gland of the endocrine system, secrets hormones (stores and releases hormones)
Cerebellum (Hindbrain)
•muscle coordination, movement & balance
Medulla Oblongata (Hindbrain)
•controls breathing, heart rate and blood pressure
• controls autonomic nervous system responses
- sympathetic & parasympathetic
Pons (Hind/mid brain)
•links cerebral cortex to cerebellum (relay centre)
Brainstem (Midbrain)
• connects cerebrum to spinal cord and cerebellum
-consist of the midbrain, pond and medulla
Parasympathetic Response
(Rest & Digest)
Neurotransmitters (Acetylcholine)
Pupils- controlled
Digestion- stimulated
Heart Rate- decreased
Breathing Rate- Decreased
Metabolism- Low; decrease glucose consumption
