The Ear Flashcards
sensory receptors are used for 2 things:
hearing and equilibrium
4 main structures of the ear
auricle, external ear, middle ear, and inner ear
sensory information is carried to the brain by the
vestibulocochlear nerve
cochlear nerve controls
hearing information
vestibular nerve controls
balance information
where sound waves travel is called the
auditory canal
the eardrum is called the
tympanic membrane
the tympanic membrane separates
external ear from middle ear
ear contains 3 bones called
ossicles
the 3 ossicles are
malleus, incus, stapes
auditory tube that connects nasopharynx with middle ear. opens with each swallow, and equalizes pressure between middle ear cavity and atmospheric pressure
eustachian tube
inner ear is also called
labyrinth
how the ossicles work to produce sound
tympanic membrane vibrates malleus, vibrations amplify as they move from one ossicle to the next, stapes transmits vibration to oval window
oval window is the
start of the inner ear
