External ear
Visible portion of the ear— collects and directs sound waves toward the middle ear
Middle ear (tympanic cavity)
Air filled chamber separated from the external acoustic meats by the tympanic membrane
What are the three auditory ossicles?
Incus, stapes malleus
Internal ear
Contains sensory organs for hearing and equilibrium, receives amplified sound waves from the middle ear
Tympanic membrane
(Eardrum) end of external acoustic meats
- thin sheet that separates the external ear from the middle ear
Auditory tube
Permits pressure equalization on either side of the tympanic membrane
Tensor tympani
Short ribbon of muscle that originates on the petrous part of the temporal bone and the auditory tube— inserts on the handle of the malleus
