The drainage basin system Flashcards
What is a drainage basin?
An area of land where all flowing surface water converges to a single point, such as a river mouth, or lake or ocean.
Is the drainage basin system open or closed?
Open, meaning water moves across its boundaries into and from other drainage basins and sources.
What is a high density drainage basin?
One with impermeable land surfaces, steep slopes, limited vegetation cover, and large channel frequency
What is a low density drainage basin?
One with permeable rock, high vegetation cover, gentle slopes, and lower channel frequency
What is the hydrological cycle?
The continuous movement of water on the Earth between the atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere
Is the hydrological system open or closed?
Closed, as there are no gains or losses from outside the system
How does the hydrological system influence the drainage basin system?
The movement of water within the drainage basin is illustrated by the hydrological cycle
