Q

How does the type of rainfall influence the hydrological cycle?

A
  • Snow may take a while to melt, and can cause massive surface run off and a rise in river channels
  • Rainfall is easily intercepted and infiltrated

Q

How does the distribution of rainfall influence the hydrological cycle?

A

If rainfall falls directly into the channel, it will affect the rivers levels quicker than if it falls in the mountains

Q

How does the intensity of rainfall influence the hydrological cycle?

A

Heavy rainfall means that the ground is quickly saturated, and surface run off will increase.
However it could lead to flooding

Q

How does the amount of rainfall influence the hydrological cycle?

A

More rainfall could mean infiltration and percolation is increased, so the water table may rise due to more water being underground.
It will also increase surface run off and therefore increase channel flow

Q

What is interception?

A

Refers to water that is caught and stored by vegetation.

Q

What is interception loss?

A

Water that is retained by plant surfaces and is later evaporated away or absorbed

What is stem flow?

A

Water that trickles along twigs and branches, and finally down the main trunk

What is overland flow?

A

Water that flows across the ground surface due to it being unable to infiltrate.

16
Q

Why does overland flow occur?

A

Due to dry, saturated, or frozen soil

17
Q

What is percolation?

A

Water that continues to seep into the soil, and percolate down to the water table

18
Q

What is groundwater flow?

A

Water that travels beneath the water table

19
Q

What is it known as when groundwater feeds into a river?

A

Baseflow

20
Q

What is infiltration?

A

The process by which water soaks into or is absorbed by the soil

21
Q

What is infiltration capacity?

A

The maximum rate at which rain can be absorbed by a soil in a given condition

22
Q

Name two outputs in a hydrological cycle

A
  • Evaporation/evapotranspiration
  • River discharge
23
Q

What is evapotranspiration?

A

The combined process of evaporation and transpiration (plant)

24
Q

What is a water table?

A

The upper level of the phreatic zone, which is the permanently saturated zone within the bedrock

25
Q

How does the water table vary?

A

It varies with the amount of groundwater in the ground

26
Q

How does recharge of a river occur?

A
  • Infiltration
  • Seepage through banks (base flow)
  • Leakage from adjacent aquifers and rocks
27
Q

What is an aquifer?

A

A rock underground which stores groundwater in it

28
Q

What is a spring?

A

Occurs once an aquifer fills up, and water reaches the land surface - flowing from the ground

29
Q

What is an aquitard?

A

A low permeability strata that confines an aquifer

30
Q

What is an aquiclude?

A

An overlying impermeable strata that confines an aquifer

31
Q

What is porosity?

A

A measure of how much a rocks volume is open space

32
Q

What is permeability?

A

A measure of the ease with which water can move through a rock
