The Divisions Of The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
A body wide system of nerve cells that collects information from the environment
What does the nervous system do?
Transmits impulses from one part of the body to another using individual nerve cells known as neurons
What are the 2 part of the nervous system?
Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
What is the CNS’ function?
Provides complex processing
What does the central nervous system consist of?
Brain and spinal cord
What is the 2 main function of the CNS?
- Control behaviour
- Regulate the body’s physiological processes
What is the function of the brain?
To process all conscious and unconscious data
What is the function of the spinal cord?
Transfer electrical impulses between the brain and the peripheral nervous system
What is the peripheral nervous system?
A body wide network of messenger neurons
What is the function of the PNS?
SendS information to the CNS from the outside world and transmit messages from the CNS to muscles and glands in the body
What are the two subdivisions of the PNS?
- Autonomic nervous system.
- Somatic nervous system.
What is the function of the somatic nervous system?
To transmit information from receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS. It also receives information from the CNS that directs muscles how to act
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
It is responsible the unconscious bodily functions
What are the two subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system?
- Parasympathetic nervous system.
- Sympathetic nervous system.
What is the function of the sympathetic nervous system?
Coordinate organs when in situations that require the individual to be aroused and expend energy – fight or flight
What is the function of the parasympathetic nervous system?
Coordinates organs when to relax and conserve energy – rest and digest
What is the function of the somatic nervous system?
It controls skeletal muscles for movement – voluntary system
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
Controls actions of internal organs and glands – involuntary system
What happens to your eyes in the sympathetic nervous system?
Pupils dilate
What happens to your eyes in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Pupils constrict
What happens to your saliva glands in the sympathetic nervous system?
Inhibits saliva production
What happens to your saliva glands in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Stimulates saliva production
What happens to your lungs in the sympathetic nervous system?
Dilate bronchi
What happens to your lungs in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Constricts bronchi
What happens to your heart in the sympathetic nervous system?
Increases heart rate
What happens to your heart in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Heart rate decreases
What happens to your gut in the sympathetic nervous system?
Inhibit food processing
What happens to your gut in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Stimulates food processing
What happens to liver in the sympathetic nervous system?
Stimulates the release of glucose
What happens to the liver in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Inhibits the release of glucose
What happens to blood vessels in the sympathetic nervous system?
Direct blood towards muscles and away from the skin
What happens to blood vessels in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Direct blood vessels towards the skin and away from muscles
