The Directional Gyro - Ch 14 Flashcards
Accuracy
Short Term very accurate - better than compass
Long Term: Compass is more accurate
Directional Indicator
Mounted Vertically - 2 gimbals 2 degrees of freedom
Displacement Gyro - electric or pneumatic
AC can move in pitch and roll with no disturbance
Lubber Line
HDG reference
Shown on the moving card indicator
Drives the motor
Air sucked in from external
Coarse Erection
Air jet: precession
Fine Erection
Wedge plate finalises adjustment with small adjustment
Re-Align
Caging Gyro: caging knob lift = re-align ( every 10 minutes or after steep turn)
If left in, stops the gyro moving for aerobatics
Electric Gyro Limits
Pitch and roll limits of 85 degrees
Errors
Aligned gyro manoeuvre - gimbal lock - when the Gimbals are not at 90 degrees to each other
Drift - Apparent wander or Real/Random Wander
