A

with the invention of the synthesizer and the drum machine. Digital developments actually allowed these machines to actually sample sound and play it back which completely changed the game.

  1. Invention of the compact disk and digital tape
    → music began to be digitized (encoded into zeros and ones) → this made sound come in smaller packages.
  2. The compression of ones and zeros allowed for files to go from 30 megabytes to 3 megabytes
  3. Songs could be shared as computer files MP3 etc.

Phase 1 - free file sharing

Phase 2 - Paid downloading -
When the ITunes store opens creating a marketplace for people to buy music online.
But because this means that you as a listener are not owning anything, the model developed further.

Phase 3 - the streaming economy
A big library in the cloud that people can access for a monthly fee → streaming music economy.

A

streaming service is a mixed costs. They get paid a flat fee which is determined by the subscription fee users pay and then there is a variable earning based on how many streams you get.
