The Digestive System Flashcards
What food molecules are too large and insoluble to pass the through the digestive system and into the blood?
Starch, proteins and fats
What are the two main functions of the digestive system?
~It can digest large insoluble molecules to small soluble ones by using enzymes
~It absorbs small soluble molecules into the blood
What do enzymes do in the digestive system?
Enzymes speed up the process of breaking down large insoluble molecules to small, soluble molecules
What is the digestive enzyme for each of the following foods? What do they produce? What is that food used for?
~Starch
~Proteins
~Fats
~Carbohydrase - Produces glucose - Used to provide energy
~Protease - Produces amino acids - Used to make proteins for growth and repair
~Fats - Produces fatty acids and glycerol - Used to provide energy
What molecules of food are small enough and soluble to pass through the digestive system into the blood?
Vitamins, minerals and water
