The Digestive System Flashcards
What is the role of the mouth?
The mouth mechanically breaks down food.
What is the role of the salivary gland?
The salivary gland produces amylase.
What is the role of the liver?
The liver produces bile.
Bile emulsifies fats and neutralises stomach acid.
What is the role of the gall bladder?
The gall bladder stores bile.
What is the role of the small intestine?
The small intestine moves glucose ions etc to the blood.
It has a large surface area.
What is the role of the stomach?
The stomach churns up food.
Stomach acid (HCl) kills bacteria.
It provides an environment for protease to work.
What is the role of the pancreas?
The pancreas produces enzymes.
What is the role of the large intestine?
The large intestine removes excess water.
What is the role of the rectum/anus?
Gets rid of waste food.
Describe lipase
Lipase breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol.
It is made in the pancreas and small intestine, and works in the small intestine.
Describe protease
Protease breaks down proteins into amino acids.
It is made in the stomach and pancreas and small intestine. It works in the stomach and small intestine.
Describe amylase.
Amylase breaks down starch into sugars.
It is made in the salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine.
It works in the mouth and small intestine.
