9
Q

what does the pancreas secrete and what do they digest?

A

They secrete a mixture of fluid and digestive enzymes called pancreatic juice

Pancreatic juice contains enzymes that digest:
-Starch (pancreatic amylase)
-Protein (carboxypeptidase trypsin, chymotrypsin)
-Triglycerides (pancreatic lipase)
Nucleic acids (RNA/DNA)

Q

The liver’s functions

A
  • carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism
  • processing of drugs and hormones;
  • excretion of bilirubin;

Q

The small intestine extents from what sphincter to the other? And is divided into what sections?

A

It extends from the pyloric sphincter to the ileocecal sphincter.

It is divided into the duodenum (chemical digestion), jejunum (absorption), and ileum (important vitamins absorbed)

16
Q

Functions of the small intestine

A

digestion and absorption.

Its glands produce enzymes and mucus, and the microvilli, villi, and circular folds of its wall provide a large surface area for digestion and absorption

17
Q

What percentage does absorption take place in the small intestine?

A

About 90% of all absorption takes place in the small intestine. The other 10% occurs in the stomach and large intestine

18
Q

The large intestine regions include

A

cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal

19
Q

colon is divided

A

ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid portions

20
Q

large intestine absorbs

A
  • water,
  • ions, including sodium and chloride,
  • some dietary vitamins
21
Q

Phases of Digestion

A

cephalic phase: the smell, sight, sound, or thought of food activates the brain.

gastric phase: presence of food in the stomach

intestinal phase: begins once food enters the small intestine and are coordinated by hormones,

gastrin (stimulate secretion of gastric juice, relaxes pyloric sphincter)

secretin (stimulate secretion of pancreatic juice rich in bicarbonate ions)

cholecystokinin (Inhibits gastric emptying, stimulates secretion of pancreatic juice rich in digestive enzymes, causes ejection of bile from gallbladder, feeling full to satisfaction)

22
Q

What does the mucosa in the large intestine contain?

A

numerous absorptive cells that absorb water
goblet cells that secrete mucus

23
Q

Chemically, faeces consists

A

water, inorganic salts, sloughed-off epithelial cells front he mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, bacteria, products of bacterial decomposition, unabsorbed digested materials, and indigestible parts of food
