Uterus
Organ in a woman’s body where a baby develops during pregnancy.
Ovum
A female cell or egg (released once a month into woman’s ovaries).
Sperm
A male cell.
Conception
When the ovum and the sperm unite (pregnancy begins).
Zygote
First stage of Development Period (fertilized egg) starts at Conception to 2 weeks.
What is the size of a Zygote after 2 weeks?
The size of a pin head.
How and Where does the Zygote travel?
Travels through the Fallopian Tube, and attached to thr lining of the uterus.
Define Parental Development
A single cell grows and develops into a human being capable of human life.
What is the Zygotes time span?
2 weeks.
What is the time span of the Embryo?
3-8 weeks.
What is the time span of a Fetus?
8-9 weeks.
What 4 things occur at the stage of an Embryo?
Major systems form, placenta form, umbilical cord, and antinomic fluid and sac.
List 4 ways the Fetus develops
Quickening occurs, Uterus expands, capable of living out of the uterus, and can suck thumb, cough, sneeze and yawn.
How long does the journey take for the Ovary to go to the Uterus?
2-3 days
How long do eggs live for?
12-24 hours
How long does sperm live for?
48-72 hours
Placenta
Placenta is a tissue. Mothers blood stream carries food and oxygen to the placenta.
Amniotic Fluid
Protects the developing baby. Cushions Embryo from any bumps or falls mother may have.
Umbilical Cord
The food and oxygen from placenta are reached here, brings nourishment. Thick and firm.
What is “quickening” and when does it begin?
The movement/kicking of the fetus becomes stronger and more frequent. Happens around month 5, 6, and 7.
What is “lightening” and when does it begin?
The baby’s weight shifts downward making the mother more comfortable. Happens the ninth month.
