What is a birth defect?
When a baby is born with a serious problem that can threaten their health and life.
Explain the differences of miscarriages and a stillbirth?
Miscarriage- baby doesn’t develop normally and baby dies before 20 weeks. Stillbirth- occurs after 20 weeks.
What proportion of children’s are born in the US have a birth defect?
3 out of 100 children
Environment Causes
Baby depends on mothers oxygen and if she makes a poor decision the baby can breathe in what the mother is around.
Heredity Causes
Baby inherits the gene and each parent passes on the same recessive gene.
Error in chromosomes
Too many or to little.
What does a genetic councilor do?
Explains the risk and options, they do not tell people what to do.
Ultra sound descriptions and risks
Sound waves used to make a video image of the fetus. No risk. (common/doesn’t tell as much).
Amniocentesis Description and Risk
Taking out amniotic fluid and testing it (causes miscarriage/higher risk/ need consent).
Chronic villi sampling description and risk
Earliest test, samples small amounts of membrane and tissue that in cases the fetus (tells the most/most risks).
