Q

discuss the ideation phase

A

Understanding the brief (instructions about what to design, timing, material specifications, formats etc.)
Research – looking at existing examples of design, inspiration, issues and possible solutions
Creation of mind maps and research documents

Q

discuss the concept phase

A

Concept sketches (many rough ideas of thinking in sketch form)
Mood board to investigate the mood / style / look of the design. Useful to present to a client.

Q

discuss the development phase

A

Developing the idea for production
Researching and exploring functionality, materials, processes and techniques (how the design will be made)
Exploring ergonomics (the way a person will engage with the design, taking into account safety, comfort and
functionality)
Exploring the visual aesthetics of the design (what the design will look like)
Creating a technical drawing with measurements and specifications for production

Q

discuss the production phase

A

Producing the design
Planning the steps to make the design
Consider budget, timing, materials and tools
Documenting the production and solving any issue that may occur through the production

Q

discuss the following three design process terms
1.linear process
2.cyclical process
3.human centered process

A
  1. A basic step by step linear process – working through the phases one by one
2.A process designed to repeat itself in a cyclic form (circular form). For example, a sustainable process would by
cyclic, where a product is recycled or repurposed for a different use, thereby having a longer life span.
3.A process where the end user (target market) is at the centre of the process and considered all the way
through the phases. The end user would provide feedback and the designer would take this into account to
rework any stage. The process is characterized by feedback loops.

Q

provide a definition of a MOCK UP

A

A rough version of the design – often used in visual communication such as packaging design, brochures etc. to

Q

provide a definition of ERGONOMICS

A

The relationship between the design and a person taking into account safety, functionality and comfort.
Considering both the physical engagement and the mind (perception of a design regarding quality, ease of use
etc.

Q

provide a definition of a MOOD BOARD

A

A collage of images, colours, textures, shapes, words which reflect the theme / mood of a design used as a

Q

provide a definition of a TECHNICAL DRAWING

A

Precise working drawings which reflect scale, measurements and specifications – such as an architectural plan,
a fashion pattern or packaging net. These are used to produce the design.

16
Q

provide a definition of an ILLUSTRATION

A

A finalized artwork which visually communicates a story or idea.

17
Q

provide a definition of an IN-SITU

A

In situation. Showing a design in its context of use. Where a design is being used or will be
used.

18
Q

provide a definition of a MINDMAP

A

A brainstorming technique to visually organise information and for generating one idea from another (to
connect and support ideas). A mind map should ensure that the information is easily read.

19
Q

describe what a concept board is and list its components

A

A board to sell and explain the design to various stakeholders.
