the design process Flashcards
list the 5 phases of the design process in order
- ideation phase
2.concept phase - development phase
- production phase
- exhibition phase
discuss the ideation phase
Understanding the brief (instructions about what to design, timing, material specifications, formats etc.)
Research – looking at existing examples of design, inspiration, issues and possible solutions
Creation of mind maps and research documents
discuss the concept phase
Concept sketches (many rough ideas of thinking in sketch form)
Mood board to investigate the mood / style / look of the design. Useful to present to a client.
discuss the development phase
Developing the idea for production
Researching and exploring functionality, materials, processes and techniques (how the design will be made)
Exploring ergonomics (the way a person will engage with the design, taking into account safety, comfort and
functionality)
Exploring the visual aesthetics of the design (what the design will look like)
Creating a technical drawing with measurements and specifications for production
discuss the production phase
Producing the design
Planning the steps to make the design
Consider budget, timing, materials and tools
Documenting the production and solving any issue that may occur through the production
discuss the exhibition phase
Exhibiting the design to the end user through advertising, marketing, online sales (website), promotion, social
media, branding, packaging and delivery
discuss the following three design process terms
1.linear process
2.cyclical process
3.human centered process
- A basic step by step linear process – working through the phases one by one
2.A process designed to repeat itself in a cyclic form (circular form). For example, a sustainable process would by
cyclic, where a product is recycled or repurposed for a different use, thereby having a longer life span.
3.A process where the end user (target market) is at the centre of the process and considered all the way
through the phases. The end user would provide feedback and the designer would take this into account to
rework any stage. The process is characterized by feedback loops.
provide a definition of a MAQUETTE
A small version of the design to scale, showing the form of the design
provide a definition of a prototype
A working model of the design produced in the Development Phase, often using simulated
Materials
provide a definition of a MOCK UP
A rough version of the design – often used in visual communication such as packaging design, brochures etc. to
show what the design may look like
provide a definition of ERGONOMICS
The relationship between the design and a person taking into account safety, functionality and comfort.
Considering both the physical engagement and the mind (perception of a design regarding quality, ease of use
etc.
provide a definition of ANTHROPOMETRICS
The data regarding the standard size of people necessary for the creation of design
Anthropology (the study of different cultures of the world) and metrics (measurements)
provide a definition of a CONCEPT SKETCH
Rough sketches reflecting ideas
provide a definition of a MOOD BOARD
A collage of images, colours, textures, shapes, words which reflect the theme / mood of a design used as a
visual representation of the possible look of a design.
provide a definition of a TECHNICAL DRAWING
Precise working drawings which reflect scale, measurements and specifications – such as an architectural plan,
a fashion pattern or packaging net. These are used to produce the design.
