The deepening Sectional Divide Flashcards
Where does industry develop?
Industry develops in the NORTH BECAUSE there was more water the which meant more sources for power/transportation and climate was not suitable for heavy farming
Embargo act of 1807& war of 1812 cut off British manufactured goods
US built factories in the north to make American manufactured goods
Once the war was over, British goods flowed into the US again
To protect American business, congress passed the tariff of 1816 which increased cost of foreign goods by 25%
Helped industries but hurt farmers
Americans encouraged to buy American goods
Where did Agriculture strengthen?
Agriculture strengthened in the SOUTH because cotton production increased due to Eli Whitney’s cotton gin —> since cotton was in higher demand, more slaves were needed
Even though slave trade was made illegal in 1808, the use of slaves in the south nearly tripled by 1860. South failed to attract immigrants because of no growing cities no factories whereas north grew more quickly and gained more political power than south
Society in the north
Rise of industry created a new working class who fights for working rights but were not very successful Created a new middle class (bankers, lawyers, clerks, retailers, etc.) Mid class was above blue collar workers but below factory owners Middle class began to move away from factories because of crowds and noise Unlike working class who couldn’t afford it This made society start to separate itself by class and race
Society changes in the south
Slaves & many poor whites = not educated
Whites develop a strong sense of racial superiority over blacks
