Civil War; CAUSES/EVENTS Flashcards
Missouri Compromise
In 1819 the states were split evenly between slave and free.
Missouri was about to become a state and it was up for debate wether it would be slave or free.
Outcome: Missouri entered union as a slave state BUT Northern Mass became free
South Carolina nullification crisis
In 1832 South Carolina nullified a federal tariff then
S.C threatened to leave the union if federal troops were sent to enforce tariff.
President Jackson felt that preserving union was more important than states rights
Webster pushed a force bill which allowed force to be used on South Carolina
Jackson ends up getting congress to LOWER the tariff ——> giving SC a way out
Tensions increase between south and fed. Gov
Wilmot proviso
In 1846 the Whig party introduced a bill that would ban slavery in all territories gained from Mexico.
It would always pass in the house but fail in the senate
Outcome —> it split party unity (whigs vs whigs, demo vs demo)
Regional divide instead of divide over political ideology
Statehood for California
Cali population increased rapidly due to gold rush
Skipped being a territory and went straight to statehood
This worried the south because California banned slavery within their state
Some southern states started talking about succeeding from the union if Cali was admitted
Outcome —> CALIFORNIA becomes free state.
When Utah and Mexico came in they got to declare (as a state) wether they were slave or free
The buying and selling of slaves was banned in DC (slaves still allowed just no more trade)
Stricter fugitive slave laws
Uncle toms Cabin
Harriet Stowe published “UT’s Cabin”
This novel showed slavery as a moral problem and how brutal it was
Sold 300,000 copies in the first year
Outcome ——> created many new abolitionists in north
Infuriated the south
Kansas- Nebraska Act
In 1854 senator Stephen douglas proposed that people who live in (or will move to) Nebraska should decide if the state is slave or free. Although, this would repeal the Missouri compromise because Nebraska was above the line (it was on free side of line so North was mad)
Congress debated the issue fiercely
Outcome —> Stephen Douglas amended the bill to add in Nebraska AND Kansas as a compromise
Many northerners and southerners rushed to Kansas to outnumber each other. 1 year later there were 2 separate governments in Kansas (slave vs. free) both sides ask congress to recognize them as a state.
Congress didn’t know what to do.
Violence and death broke out in Kansas… bleeding Kansas
Kansas was later accepted in 1861 as a FREE state during the civil war (lack of southern representatives)
