Q

How did Feudalism affect the Noble, the commoner and the knight? (better? worse?)

A
  1. Noble: there power was shared with the common people. They also forced King John to sign the Magna Carta which became a foundation for people having rights and freedom. However after the plague the power shifted from nobles to common people.
  2. The commoner: the Black Death caused many deaths so that means less people could work at farms so those who did asked for more money and rights. Thanks to King Edward I, they began having a voice in the government so this helped them built a better life. they began moving to the cities and working as they wished so they had a chance to make a life as they wished. They were happier.
  3. Knights: They had to fight in the 100 years War so many knights died. The Black Death also killed many knights.

Q

How did the plague contribute to the fall or decline of Feudalism?

A

During 1346-1351, the plague created many changes in Europe’s economic and social structure.

Many people died so that meant that very few people could farm. This slowed down trade and commerce.

The common people then began to demand more money and they began to move to towns and cities which weakened the manor system and the end of serfdom.

Also, after the plague the power shifted from the nobles to common people.

Q

How did the 100 Year War start?

A

The wars began during 1337 and 1453, England lost their lands in France and they wanted them back so battles began between England and France for control over the lands in France.

17
Q

How did the 100 Year Wars contribute to the decline of Feudalism?

A

It helped shift the power from lords to monarchs and to common people.

During this time the monarchs collected taxes that helped them build large professional armies. The kings no longer relied on nobles to supply knights for the army. Military technology also made the nobles’ knights and castles less useful. The longbow was an excellent weapon and the canon balls knocked down the castles walls.

The war also created a feeling of nationalism or patriotism so they no longer had loyalty only to lords. The commoners had greater power and influence after the war because they were needed as soldiers and workers.

18
Q

Why were the English able to defeat the French in early battles, such as the one at Crecy?

A

The French had heavy armor and cross bows while the English had lighter armor and longbows. The long bows were faster, more accurate and shot farther.

19
Q

Who was Joan of Arc? What did she do for the French during the 100Years WAr?

A

At 17 she heard voices of saints telling her to save France. In 1429, Joan led the French army to victory in the Battle of Orleans. Later she was captured by the English and was accused of being a heretic and witch and burned her. 22 years later, inspired by Joan of Arc the French drove the English out of their country. The church later announced her a saint.

24
Q

How did the political changes contribute to the decline of Feudalism?

A

King Henry II, 1154-1189, insisted that a jury should formally accuse a person of a serious crime so this gave power to the royal courts and took away from the lords. He also created the Constitutions of Clarendon which was a document about the kings traditional rights.

Then King John, at 1215 was forced to sign the Magna Carta which limited the power of the monarchs and gave rights to common people.

In 1295 King Edward I put together a governing body that called the Model Parliament.

People began to have a voice, they became more free, and began to build slowly, slowly a better life.
