“Mabel Normand and John Gilbert must have swum in it “
Wilder symbolises the pool to resprest the golden age of silent film actors, place for luxury and sucess, once filled with silent actor legends like Mabel Normand and John Gilbert, now nothing more than a setting for Joe’s tragic demise. Wilder here critiques the the ruhtless hollywood cycle, that pulls stars to top and unltimately discards them. Joes sarcastic remark “ poor dope. Her urgency, presents Normas breakdown to be another piece of entertainment to be broadcasted. Hollywood is condemed by Wilder to dehumanised Norma in this scene into an object, one to be presented and profited off
