Joe walks in, and views the room for the first time and mentions the word intimatre, a whirring sound was played from the organ.

how is this related to the control

When Joe enters the living room, Billy Wilder introduces an eerie whirring noise,to which Joe soon adds “Intimate isnt it?” setting a unsettling tone that foreshadowes Normas deluded world within the mansion that will eventually entrap Joe into his demise.

Q

How is normas leapord print important?

A

Norma’s leopard print clothing is more than just fashion—it is a symbol of her power, her predatory nature, and her theatrical self-image. Billy Wilder, through costuming and visual storytelling, reinforces Sunset Boulevard’s central themes: Hollywood as a ruthless jungle, where stars fight to stay relevant, but in the end, no one escapes being devoured by time.

Edith Head decided to pick out this costuming as the leopard print symbolises deception as she waits for Joe (her prey) to finish reading the script before deciding whether to capture him

Q

what was the song Max was playing on the piano and why is it important

A

The sound designer Franz Waxman plays Toccata and Fugue during Joes description of the organ grinder that was “ draped in black” reinforcing the films film noir gothic tone, invoking an uneasy feeling upon the audience. However as Joe wakes up ,Waxman transitions the music to be digetic sound, diorientating the audience and Joe himself, implying the blur between what is real and merely a “fascade”. By shifitng the audiences perception of sound, Wilder not only deepens the horror Joe has pushed himself into but also critques Hollywood to be a place where reality bleeds into its illusions, eventually tricking them to be trapped forever.

Also note the song Toccata and Fugue is commonly used in horror films, Gothic literature adaptations, and moments of eerie suspense, reinforcing the film’s unsettling, haunted atmosphere.
The pipe organ was heavily used in silent film accompaniment, and Norma comes from the silent film era.
The choice of Bach’s organ music links to Norma’s inability to move past her silent film legacy, as her home is filled with elements of that lost cinematic world.

Q

what was the quote max said to joe in the dark something about star

A

” i made her a star and i cannot let her be destroyed”

17
Q

Joe crosses his arms, when norma starts crying again and when she threatnes to use the revolver

why is this significant

A

At this point, Joe has already recognized Norma’s emotional outbursts as manipulative, and his reaction suggests he no longer wants to engage with her on an emotional level.
His crossed arms create a physical barrier and psychological between them, signaling that he is no longer responding to her with sympathy, he has protected himself from being infleunced longer.

18
Q

“What is it — want? —–?”

A

“What is it that you want? Money?”
