Describe the reign of Baldwin I

A

His reign was both strong and effective because he managed to consolidate the territories of Outremer and actively defend it against the Turkish threats. Additionally his system of castles were heavily depended on for defence and helped Outremer to survive

A

When Baldwin I died on 2 April 1118 he named his brother as heir. However Baldwin of Bourcq the count of Edessa arrived in Jerusalem and tried to take the throne. As a result of his supporters and being present in Jerusalem, Baldwin was crowned King

Describe the reign of Baldwin II

A

He quickly proved himself to be an able and effective defender, this was shown when Antioch was left without a regent and he acted in this role until 1126. Additionally he continued Baldwins I’s strategy of expansion in order to minimise threat to Jerusalem

❗️Despite his successes, what challenges did Baldwin face? (2)

A

1: rebellion in 1123: Baldwin was captured in the military campaign and was imprisoned for a year, during this time some of the Jerusalem’s nobles tried to get Count Charles of Flanders installed as king
2: Baldwin only had daughters and therefore was unable to secure male line, he overcame this by marrying his daughter - Melisende - to Count Fulk of Anjou and they had a baby (Baldwin III)

Why was there conflict?

A

Conflict arose when Fulk became king, he chose to put the Angevins into key position within the nobility of Jerusalem, he angered the established Lords. Additionally his sidelining of Melisende lead to a revolt by Count Hugh of Jaffa in 1134

A

He made an agreement with the Muslims against Fulk. However, the effect of this turned some of his supporters against him forcing him to give up his rebellion. On his way out of the kingdom for his punishment of exile, he was stabbed and killed

A

All the Crusader states looked up to Baldwin for help to restore stability. For example Raymond II of Tripoli was murdered and Princess Constance of Antioch had lost her husband in battle

A

His sisters husband died before Baldwin V was born, he needed to find a king to rule alongside his sister until her son became of age. He was aware Raymond III wanted power and influence over government

❗️Who did his sister marry and why was this a mistake?

A

She married Guy of Lusignan. However, in 1183 Baldwin fell ill unable to fight against Saladin’s invasion forces in Galilee and appointed Guy as his regent to act in his place. However, he struggled to get the lords to obey him. Baldwin, losing faith, took back control of his kingdom

What did this mean for Raymond III?

A

Raymond III was appointed regent for Baldwin IV in 1185 and continued this role for Baldwin V when the king died a year later

❗️How did Raymond fall from power?

A

In 1185 the barons of Jerusalem want to Baldwin IV’s sister (Sibyl) to be queen but only if she was to divorce Guy. She did what they asked and was crowned Queen and then chose Guy to be King, the nobles had been were angry. At the same time of the crowning Raymond went to Nablus and planned to crown Isabel (niece of Baldwin III) and Humphrey. However, instead of accepting the crown, Humphrey rushed to Jerusalem to pay for homage - making Raymond furious and once again losing his grip on power

A

There was a divided nobility which meant a response to a Muslim threat was difficult to organise - the government had crippled

A

Raymond made a truce with Saladin - it was logical, because the division between the kingdom meant they weren’t able to take action against Saladin

❗️How was the truce broken?

A

In 1187, Reynald launched a raid on the Muslims. King Guy tried to salvage the truce by requesting to Reynolds to return what he stole. However, still bitter of the succession ignored Guy which gave Saladin the excuse to attack in 1187

❗️Why was Raymond a traitor?

A

In 1187, Raymond - afraid that Guy would attack because he refused to pay homage to him - asked Saladin for help in exchange he would allow a force of 7,000 men to journey through Galilee and siege Arce. Raymond was branded a traitor

How did Raymond being branded a traitor effect the Franks?

A

When the military orders were sent to encourage Raymond to restore his relationship with King Guy, they were surprised by Saladin’s forces in the area. They ignored Raymond’s advice to hide out and wait for his forces to pass through - as a result they launched an attack on his forces and were defeated. Similarly Guy suffered the same thing, causing Jerusalem to fall to Saladin
