the cranial cavity and meninges Flashcards
what is dura mater
outline area of the cranial cavity, made of collagen
what is arachnoid mater
is directly below dura mater but is not attached to it, is pushed very close together due to CSF - has spider web like projections
what is arachnoid granulation -
are white fluffy grnauluations present in the brain that will drain CSF from the subarachnoid space to the superior sagittal sinus
what is Pia mater
pia mater is a highly vascular layer which is closely attached to the cerebral hemisphere, it is very soft and thin
what is the middle meningeal artery
is a branch of the maxillary artery, enter the skull at the foramen spinosum and supplies blood to the dura mater and the skull
what is the superior sagittal sinus
attached to the margin of the fax cerebri is a special venous channel in fold of the dura mater that has no valves and allows blood o be brain form the lateral aspects of the anterior cerebral hemisphere lined by epithelium
what is mengitsis
is a disease in which one of the meninges become infected
what is the falx cerebi
sickle shaped fold of dura mater which separates the 2 hemisphere and with the CSF cushions he brain
what is an extra-dural haemorrhage
rupture of the middle meningeal artery, which causes a hemotoma and over hours causes loss of conscious - is causes by a small fracture to the skull which in turn tears the artery
what is an sub-dural haemorrhage
when the Brian is knocked and the cerebral veins break away from the superior sagittal sinus - causing a build up of blood in the arachnoid space and dura mater - usually occurs in the elderly can take weeks to notice
what is a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage
when the cerebral arteries aneurysm and rupture causes blood to enter the CFS - conciseness lost very fast
