Papacy started with Doctrine instead of discipline (not what Charles wanted).
Only differences between Protestant and catholic, not within catholic.
Wanted to address doctrine and then go through discipline of Church.
Outbreak of plague so suspended, not much achieved
What was Paul III’s role in the Council of Trent?
Understood the extent of the spread of reform.
Used his skills to reduce obstacles:
- venue was decided through Charles suggestion
- established method of individual voting
- call for council come from him
Why was it so difficult to set up the Council of Trent?
Charles V > conflict with Francis I and Turks. Compromises with Lutherans would reunite empire and would increase

Was focused on the problem of Salvation and justification of ‘faith alone’.
Bishops and cardinals worked to to compromise between salvation and predestination.
