The Control Systems of the Body Flashcards
What systems are the control systems of the body?
endocrine and nervous systems are the control systems
How does the endocrine system regulate? What does it affect?
affects all body tissues
regulates by secreting hormones into the blood stream
How does the nervous system regulate? What does it act on?
regulates by nerve impulses, acts on muscles and glands
What are hormones?
potent, complex chemicals produced in a site different from the site where they produce, initiate, or regulate the activity of a specific organ or group of cells
How does the endocrine system maintain homeostasis?
by secreting hormones
How are the endocrine systems hormone secretion controlled? Why does it need to be controlled?
- the secretion of hormones is regulated to prevent oversecretion or undersecretion
- controlled by signals from the nervous system, chemical changes in blood, and other hormones
