What rights does the consumer have while shopping for goods under the sale of goods and supply of services act 1980?
Goods must be
(a)Merchantable Quality

What does merchantable quality mean?
means the goods must be of an acceptable standard. Example: apple on sale in a shop is rotten on the inside. The apple is not of “merchantable quality.
What does fit for purpose mean?
means goods must do exactly the job they are designed and intended to do.
Example: raincoat advertised as waterproof let the rain in.
What does as described mean?
means the goods must be exactly as they are described on the packaging, brochure or by description of salesperson. Example: a shirt advertised as 100% cotton, but it is actually 50% nylon is “not as described”.
What does match the sample mean?
means the goods must be identical to the sample displayed in the shop.
What rights do consumers have when purchasing services under the supply of goods and services act 1980?
(a) Supplier is qualified and has necessary skills
b) Supplier provide service with proper care
(c) Materials used are of merchantable quality
(d) Goods sold as part of service are of merchantable quality
What is the Responsibility of retailers?
The retailer is always legally responsible for solving a consumer complaint. They cannot tell you to contact the manufacturer. The contract is with the retailer.
What is a Guarantee of retailers?
this is extra protection for the consumer and should not take away from consumer rights. He can choose to have the goods fixed by manufacturer under the guarantee or insist the retailer follows the Law.
What are the 3 R’s?
Refund,Repair,Replace
What does the Consumer Protection act 2007 protect you from?
This law protects consumers from misleading (false / fake) claims about goods/services/prices
What are the Consumer rights when buying Online?
- Right to a refund if goods are not delivered within 30 days
- Right to change your mind. 14 days to return product online if you change your mind (not applicable if bought in shop in person)
- Right to cancel a service online (14 days cooling off period) e.g.
