The Construction Industry Flashcards
base isolators
Large Shock absorbers made of alternating layers of rubber and steel. Attached to a foundation to allow movement of the structure.
Brownfield sites
Properties that are abandoned or underused because of historic environmental contamination.
Constructability review
The design review process in which contractors and CM work with designers to ensure that the details of the design can actually be built in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Process reviews material, application. installation. field execution and building systems.
Cofferdams
temporary watertight enclosure to allow construction in a water-free space.
Curtain wall
Exterior cladding system that is supported by the frame of the building, rather than being load-bearing or self-supporting
Lean principles
creating more value for customers with less work and the elimination of waste.
Program
A written statement that identifies and describes owners’ end-users needs and requirements for a facility. (Architectural programming)
Project delivery
The process by which building, facility or structure is designed and constructed. Ex. Design-Bid-Build
Self-performed work
Construction work that is performed by the prime contractors on labour. This work is not sub-contracted
Slip forms
Concrete forms that rise up the wall as construction progresses
Specifications
Written instructions from an architect or engineer accompanying the project plans pertaining to the quality of materials and workmanship required for the project.
What are the five primary sectors of the construction industry?
Residential, commercial, heavy civil, industrial, and environmental construction.
What is the role of the owner?
To develop the program for the building, define the scope of the project, create the budget, and provide the funding for the project.
What does LEED stand for, and what is its purpose?
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a rating system that evaluates a building’s environmental performance over its life cycle.
What is Lean construction?
The philosophy that focuses on adding value with less work and the elimination of waste in the building process.
