Define a codified constitution
All written down in one document.
Constitutional laws are ENTRENCHED so they have higher status than other laws.
Define Uncodified Constitution
Made up of several sources.
Constitutional laws have the same status as other laws, so are UNENTRENCHED.
Define Unitary
Power is concentrated in a single body/institution.
e.g. The UK
Define Federal
Power is shared between institutions.
e.g. The USA
The UK constitution’s key documents… The Magna Carta
Signed in 1215 to limit the kings power over the people.
Certain basic rights were established.
The UK Constitution’s key documents… Bill of Rights
Established in 1689 to guarantee further basic rights for the people and PARLIAMENT.
The UK constitution’s key documents… Acts of Union
Established in 1707 when Scotland was added to the United Kingdom.
However Scotland still had a separate legal system.

Established in 1911 and 1949 to limit the House of Lords’ power.
Could no longer stop a bill, now could only veto a bill.
The UK constitution’s key documents… European Communities Act
Britain joined the EU.
Meaning that EU law took PRECEDENCE over UK law.
Overall patterns of reform:
Gradual change in power from the monarch to parliament (HOC’s especially.)
Gradual change increase in the protection of civil rights and liberties.
