The Consequence of Earthquakes - Tsunamis Flashcards
1
Q
During an earthquake in the ocean where do the shocks waves travel?
A
Through the water and rise steeply as the shore is reached to from a wave/tidal surge.
2
Q
What are tsunamis associated with?
A
Plate margins and other major faults.
3
Q
Why do tsunamis form?
A
From the displacement in the sea floor, either as a direst effect of the earthquake or indirectly, by submarine slumping sediments around the coast, especially on edges of ocean trenches.
4
Q
Why does the wave steepen at the shore?
A
Due to shallow water and gentle slope of seabed.
5
Q
Give an example of a fast steep tsunami?
A
1958, 30m high tsunami approached the Alaskan shore at a speed of over 200km an hour.
