define human development (DLEAP)
creating an environment in which people can:
- Develop to their full potential
- Lead productive and creative lives in accordance to their needs and interests
- Expand their choices and enhance their capabilities
- Access knowledge, health, and a decent standard of living
- Participate in their community and decisions affecting their lives
define the human development index (HDI)
- a measure of the level of human development in a country
- take into account various socioeconomic factors, combining dimensions of: a long and healthy life, knowledge, and a decent standard of living
dimension of HDI: a long and healthy life
indicator: life expectancy at birth
- the number of year a person can expect to live at birth if death rates do not change
dimension of HDI: knowledge
indicator: expected years of schooling
- the number of years of formal schooling expected to be achieved by those entering the school system
indicator: means years of schooling
- the average number of years of schooling achieved by those aged 25 and over
dimension of HDI: a decent standard of living
indicator: gross national income per capita (in $US)
- the average income per person in a country, once debts to other countries have been paid
HDI rankings
- very high human development: 0.8 or above
- high human development: 0.7 to 0.799
- medium human development: 0.550 to 0.699
- low human development: less than 0.550
HDI advantages
- acknowledges and address broader socio-economic factor that impact HD
- not one dimensional; combines dimensions of health, education and living standards
- single statistical measure from 0-1 allows for distinct comparison b/w countries
HDI disadvantages
- no survey data; people’s feelings about their own HDI not taken into account
- lower income countries may not have reliable data so the HDI might not be accurate
- rating between 0-1 does not tell us anything about individual dimensions
