Factors that contribute: safe water & sanitation (AOS_1) Flashcards
1
Q
define safe water
A
means having ready access to a water source that is not contaminated and is safe to drink
2
Q
clean/safe water is needed for:
A
- consumption
- food prep and cooking
- washing and hygiene
- agriculture and production
3
Q
impacts of safe water on health status and BOD
A
- water is needed for crops which may result in malnutrition = increased levels of morbidity
- contaminated water result in water-born diseases = increased YLDs
- long distances travelled to get water results in musculoskeletal conditions = increased YLDs
4
Q
define sanitation
A
refers to the safe disposal of human urine and faces, as well as the maintenance of hygienic condition through garbage collection and the disposal of waste water
5
Q
impacts of sanitation on health status and BOD
A
- no functioning waste disposal means poor air quality, increasing the risk of air-borne diseases and respiratory = increased YLDs
- poor sanitation weakens immune system, increasing risk of infectious/communicable diseases = increased incidence
- no sewage system increases risk of water-born diseases = increased DALYs
