This a strategy designed to keep communism from spreading. It was used by the U.S. to combat the Soviet Union, and eventually Vietnam, Laos, Germany, and Cuba.
Containment
The goal of this decision was ultimately to prevent South Vietnam from succumbing to Communism.
US involvement in Vietnam War
The launch of this triggered competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in the ‘space race’. It shocked America into enlarging their space program after 1957.
Sputnik
A violent protest occurred at this event amidst campaigning for the 1968 presidential election. The violence drew attention to the war and the belief that democrats were to blame.
Democratic National Convention (1968)
Legislation passed in 1958 by president Eisenhower because of his belief that students in the U.S. were falling behind their communist counterparts and sought to reform the national curriculum.
National Defense Education Act
During his farewell address, President Eisenhower warned against this, believing that advancement wont be achieved through defense spending and politico-military relationships.
Military-industrial complex
The U.S. sought to declare war on communism following the outbreak of armed conflict in Korea with the help of the United Nations. They hoped to establish peace and remove communist invaders.
United Nations’ role in the Korean War
This conflict, fought during 1950-1953, began when North Korea invaded South Korea. It was the United States’ first action against communism after WWII.
Korean War
This was the longest conflict in U.S. history, lasting 25 years; It was a ‘proxy’ war; The Soviet and China supported North Vietnam, while the U.S. supported South Vietnam.
The Vietnam War
This began when the U.S was notified that the Soviet Union sent missiles to Cuba. The U.S. and the U.S.S.R. narrowly avoided a nuclear confrontation.
Cuban Missile Crisis
Republican senator from Wisconsin who rose to power by instigating fear in communism. His name was used as a term for accusing and detaining suspects to minimize communism.
Joseph R. McCarthy
This belief, notably held by President Eisenhower, claimed that if Vietnam fell to communism, the rest of South Asia would fall as well.
Domino Theory
An armistice reached on July 27, 1953 marked this major event, but little was actually achieved. There are still unresolved issues and a sustained conflict between North and South Korea.
End of the Korean War
This was presented to Congress by President Johnson as a result of an alleged attack by North Vietnamese patrol boats on U.S. Navy ships, committing the U.S. to respond.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
This was a program established by President John F. Kennedy that promoted democracy and shunned communism.
