The Cognitive Interveiw Flashcards
Define the cognitive interview
Developed by Fisher and Geiselman
Interviewing witnesses after a crime or an accident to help facilitate the most accurate and detailed memory
What type of questions are used in the cognitive interview ?
Lots of open questions are asked where witnesses are not interrupted and free to expand in there own answers
Describe recall everything
A witness is asked to report all details of an event even if it seems irrelevant
How does RE improve EWT?
Might act as a trigger to a memory of additional information
Describe what is context reinstatement ?
The witness is asked to mentally place themselves back at the scene
Such as imagining the weather and there emotions
How does CR improve EWT?
Using context and state dependent cues may help trigger memories
Describe recall in reverse ?
Witness is asked to report what happened in diffrent chronical order
How will recall of reverse improve accuracy of EWT?
Prevents dishonestly as it’s harder to lie when having to reverse a story
Describe recall from a changed perspective?
The witness is asked to recall the incident from another persons perspective
How will CP improve EWT
Prevent witnesses reporting what they expected to happen rather than what happened
What is a stregth of the cognitive interview ?
Conducted by kohnken et al 1999
Compared CI with standard intervewis
Reported CI had an increase of 41% correct information ccomapred to standard interview
How does kohnken et el research support CI as an effective technique in improving EWT?
It helps recall information that is stored in the memory but not easily accessible
Weakness milne and bull 2002
Not all techniques in CI are as equally as effective
What did milne and bull 2002 find ?
Found that each of the 4 techniques used alone produced more information
But also found that using a combination of report everything and context reisatatement produced better recall
Why is milne and bull 2002 a weakness ?
As it may mean that CI is not used effectively thus limiting the effectiveness of CI improving accuracy of EWT
