Q

explain Beck’s cognitive theory?

A

this is to identify automatic thoughts about the world, the self and the future. This is the negative triad. These thoughts must then be challenged. cognitive therapy aims to help clients test the reality of the negative beliefs. They are then set homework to record when people are nice to them. This is sometimes referred to as the client as a scientist, if client say that no one was nice to them or there is no point of going to the events. The therapist were produced this as evidence and use this to prove the client statement is incorrect

A
  • REBT extend the ABC model to an ABCDE model D stands for dispute E for effect. The REBT is identify and dispute irrational thoughts for example, A client might talk about how unlucky they have been an REBT therapist but identify these and cause a vigorous argument between them if it is an empirical argument it involves disputing whether there is an actual evidence to support the negative belief logical argument involves disputing with the negative thought logically is the fact.

Q

One strength of CBT?

A

It’s effectiveness of treating depression. March compared to CBT to antidepressant drugs and also to a combination of both treatments when treating 327 to adolescence. after 36 weeks 81% of the CBT group 81% antidepressant groups and 86% of the CBT plus group was significantly improved. so CBT was just as effective when using its own and alongside. it is also very cost-effective as it only requires 6 to 12 sessions

Q

what is one limitation of CBT?

A

The lack of effectiveness of severe cases for clients with learning disabilities sometimes they’re unable to motivate themselves and even unable to pay attention to what’s happening in A session. also the complex rational thinking of all the CBT makes it unsuitable for treating depression with clients with learning disabilities. Peter suggest that any form of psychotherapy it is not useful for people with learning disabilities.

Q

What is a further limitation of CBT?

A

It’s high relapse late ,although there is quite effective there are some concerns on how long the benefits last. for example Ali assessed depression in 439 clients every month for 12 months , 42% of the clients relapse depression within six months and 53% relapse within a year this means CBT may need to be repeated periodically.
