The Cognitive Approach To Explaining Depression Flashcards
What is the cognitive approach?
How our mental processes affect behaviour
what is a negative triad?
Three kinds of negative thinking that contributes to becoming to depressed for example, Negative views of the world, the future and the self. Makes them more vulnerable to depression
What is the ABC model?
Alice proposed that when an activating (A) event triggers an irrational belief (B) which in turn produces a consequence
What is faulty information processing?
(negative triad)
- when depressed people focus on the negative aspects of a situation and ignore the positives. for example if a depressed person won £1 million on the lottery. They might focus on the fact that in the previous week someone had won £10 million, depressed people have black-and-white thinking.
what is negative self schema?
(negative triad)
Schema is a package of ideas and information developed for experience. A self schema is a package of information people have about themselves so if a person has a negative self schema they interpret all information about themselves in a negative way.
explain the negative triad?
A person develops a dysfunctional view of themselves because of free types of negative thinking for example
a) negative view of the world “the world is a cold place”
b) negative view of the future “there isn’t much chance that economy will really get better”
c) negative view of the self for example, “I am a failure”
explain Ellis’s ABC model?
A activating event - irrational thoughts are triggered by external events. Ellis said we get depressed when we experience negative events and these trigger irrational beliefs example failing an important test might trigger these.
B beliefs - is the belief that it is a disaster when something does not go smoothly
C consequences - when an activating event triggers irrational beliefs there are consequences for example a person must believe that they always succeeded and then when they fail something it triggers depression
explain one strength in Beck’s cognitive model?
There is existence of supporting research for example cognitive vulnerability refers on how a person becomes depressed. Clark and Beck concluded not only were those in cognitive vulnerability more common and depressed but they proceeded the depression for example this was shown by study by Joseph attract the development of 473 adolescence measuring cognitive vulnerability and found out later this predicted later depression
Explain a further strength in Becks cognitive model?
Its applications in screening and treatment for depression Concluded that cognitive vulnerability allows psychologist to screen young people identifying those most at risk. They can be also applied in cognitive behaviour therapy this makes them more resilient to negative life events helping them
What is one strength of Ellis’s ABC model?
It’s real world application in a psychological treatment for depression.Ellis’s therapy is REBT for short. The idea of REBT is that by vigorously argue with the depressed person it can alter their irrational beliefs making them unhappy. This means REBT has real world value.
One limitation of Ellis’s ABC Model?
It only explains a reactive depression and not an endogenous depression. Sometimes depression is not from real life events. This leads to a person become more depressed a particular time this is called endeogenous depression and this is a model is less useful for explaining endogenous depression.
