What are the aims of CBT?
To identify and challenge irrational thoughts and replacing them with more productive behaviour, therefore treating depression
What does Becks CBT aim. to do?
Aims on identifying the patients thoughts and challenging them as irrational. It’s guided by the cognitive triad of automatic negative thoughts about self, future and the world, faulty information processing and negative self schemas

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)
What is the aim of REBT?
Aims to identify the patients thoughts and challenge them as irrational leading to an argument
WHat does REBT aim to change?
The irrational beliefs and break the link between negative life events and depression.
How are patients encourage to engage in enjoyable activities?
Behavioural activation
Give a + (SRE)
Supporting research evidence - March followed 327 adolescents with depression. After 36 weeks over 80% had improvement with CBT, antidepressants and a combination. This compelling evidence for the idea is that antidepressants are effective in treating depression and based on accurate biological explanations of depression
Give a - (AAC)
CBT may not be appropriate in all cases particularly severe cases. This could’ve been reflected in Marchs evidence as the combination was most effective. This is because those. with severe depression may not be able to attend regular CBT, due to lack of motivation and feeling hopeless. Meaning CBT can’t be used to address all cases and isn’t suitable for people that most need it
Give a - (CAPL)
The focus of cognitive approach is on present life and challenges it presents. It’s assumed the patients current circumstances are responsible for depression. A considerable number of patients may be aware for a specific causes. Since CBT therapists are unwilling to dwell on the past patients may become frustrated as they’ve had little input or say into how their therapy is bought about
